Imported Food Inspection Delays (Victoria)
The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) has advised that it is currently experiencing delays in inspection availability for imported food consignments arriving in Melbourne, Victoria.
DAFF has indicated that delays are being driven largely by booking behaviours and goods not being ready for inspection at the time bookings are made .
Clients can continue to book inspections through the Biosecurity Portal, however scheduled inspection dates may be subject to longer than normal wait times.
DAFF is responding by accelerating training of new staff, increasing inspection capacity, and actively reviewing booking schedules to improve efficiencies.
Industry reminders:
Only select “Goods Ready for Inspection” when goods are genuinely prepared and compliant with BICON and issued directions
Ensure all documentation is complete and goods are correctly presented and segregated where required
Selecting AM/PM preferences may delay inspections — choosing “Anytime” may result in earlier availability
Consider virtual inspections where eligible, particularly for label and visual checks
Failure to meet inspection readiness requirements may result in booking cancellations, fees and further delays. For booking enquiries, DAFF can be contacted on 1800 900 090.
