Stevedore workers at DPW’s Melbourne and Sydney terminals are reported as have refused to work the morning shifts today.

This new development is the MUA’s direct reaction to DPW’s stated position on Monday of this week, that they would no longer tolerate partial work bans from today.

My information at this point is as follows, in terms of the disruption to each terminal:

• Sydney = No staffing

• Brisbane = No staffing

• Melbourne – skeleton staffing

• Fremantle – yet to be determined due to current time difference

I have been in touch with DPW senior management, who have advised that they are aiming to provide an update to the industry on this situation at around 10am this morning.

Members should inform their customers that this situation will lead to substantial delays in import and export container movements through DPW terminals today and likely through the weekend.

The lack of action to date by the Federal Government is totally unacceptable and is laid care today.

The path suggested by myself in my interview with Nine’s Weekend Show last Saturday was not taken by all parties and here we are at this point (see video of that here).

I expect to be able to provide members with a further update on this situation later today.
