AUSTRALIA–EU FREE TRADE AGREEMENT: WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOUR FREIGHT

24 March 2026

After nearly eight years of negotiations, Australia has concluded a landmark Free Trade Agreement with the European Union — one of the most significant trade developments in a generation.

The agreement will lower trade and investment barriers between Australia and the EU, a market of around 450 million people across 27 countries. pm

The headline numbers:

98% of the current value of Australia's exports will enter the EU duty-free under the new agreement. pm The EU was Australia's second largest source of foreign investment in 2024, with total investment stock worth $869.3 billion. pm

Key wins for Australian exporters:

Australian farmers and producers will benefit from the elimination of almost all EU tariffs on agricultural products, including wine, nuts, fruit and vegetables, honey, olive oil, most dairy products, wheat and barley, and seafood. pm For trade lanes where DDWL is active — including food and beverage exports — this is a direct commercial opportunity.

Almost all Australian exports of manufactured goods and mineral resources will also face zero import tariffs into the EU. pm

What this means for freight:

Reduced tariff barriers typically drive increased trade volumes — more export bookings, more import demand, and new supply chain routes opening up between Australia and Europe. For businesses currently shipping to or from EU markets, now is the time to review your freight arrangements and ensure your logistics strategy is positioned to take advantage of improved market access.

At D&D Worldwide Logistics, we have established relationships with carriers and agents across European trade lanes and can assist with FCL, LCL, and air freight solutions to and from EU destinations.

The agreement still needs to be completed with domestic ratification processes in both Australia and the EU before formally entering into force, so timelines for implementation are yet to be confirmed.
