Update to the below dated 24.10.2023

DP WORLD CALLS ON THE CFMEU-MUA DIVISION TO COME BACK TO THE BARGAINING TABLE

As you may be aware, the protected industrial action initiated by the CFMEU-MUA DIVISION has resulted in rolling stop work bans since October 6th. Unfortunately, this has had a significant impact on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across Australia, including those that rely on our services.

DP World plays a vital role in facilitating the smooth flow of goods across borders, ensuring that Australian businesses have access to the products they need. However, the industrial action has caused substantial delays and disruptions in our import and export supply chains. For instance, the process of offloading a ship at our terminals in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Fremantle, which usually takes up to two days, has been extended to seven to eight days due to the ongoing industrial action. This has resulted in increased cargo emissions and a significant slowdown in the flow of goods, directly impacting SMEs that depend on timely deliveries.

It's important to note that these delays not only affect goods coming into Australia for consumers but also disrupt the export of Australia's top produce to the global market. This disruption comes at a time when demand and opportunities are increasing, further exacerbating the impact on SMEs and the wider economy. Additionally, with the upcoming holiday season approaching, the continued disruption and delays caused by the protected industrial action are likely to result in scarce inventory on store shelves. This could create difficulties for countless households across the nation as they prepare for the festive season.

We want to assure you that DP World has approached negotiations with goodwill and flexibility over the past six months of Enterprise Bargaining Agreements (EBA). We have made concessions where appropriate, but unfortunately, the CFMEU-MUA DIVISION has remained inflexible and uncompromising in their stance. Despite our efforts to make progress in the negotiations, the Union's refusal to cease protected industrial action has hindered discussions. Moreover, they have escalated bans and work disruptions, which have been effective since October 15th.

Their insistence on the approval of all their demands would place considerable financial strain on our company, impacting not only our clients but also the wider logistics network and the general Australian population. We remain committed to fostering a modernised supply chain in Australia.

However, conceding to all 365 claims put forward by the union would have serious repercussions for our company, as well as for the Australian public, households, and SMEs.

We urge the CFMEU-MUA DIVISION to reconsider their approach, engage in constructive dialogue, and prioritise outcomes that benefit not only their members but also the broader Australian community. While we respect the right to industrial action, the current trajectory will unfortunately result in lost wages for our workers and service disruptions for the wider community. We are determined to find a resolution and are available to meet in the suggested timeframes.

However, we hope that the CFMEU-MUA DIVISION will reconsider their decision and suspend any planned industrial action during the negotiation period, in the spirit of constructive dialogue. Our commitment remains to serve the Australian public and businesses while ensuring that disruptions are minimised.

The CFMEU Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) division has made its intentions of industrial action clear, committing to several strikes across October.

These strikes come as a response to continuing negotiation to a new industrial agreement between the union and global logistics provider DP World.

Workers will undertake action across DP World locations in Sydney, Melbourne, Fremantle and Brisbane. These will range from bans on working overtime or extending shifts to full eight-hour work stoppages.

The company has acknowledged the upcoming action, saying it will aim to quickly come to an agreement while keeping its supply chain moving to ensure minimal disruption.

DP World Oceania executive vice president Nicolaj Noes says that reaching a resolution with the union will be the utmost priority.

As part of the industrial action, the MUA is seeking rises in wages to recognise the significant pressure it believes is currently being faced by maritime workers.

Current terms being put in front of the MUA include a change to rostering systems by DP World, aiming to offer more flexible rostering coming into a Christmas period where freight workers are in greater demand than ever.

DP World Fremantle, changes will come into effect from Friday, October 6th. This includes work stoppages of varying durations and a range of operational bans, including overtime and specific ship-related tasks, all commencing at 0600hrs.

DP World Sydney will undergo significant changes starting Saturday, October 7th commencing at 0600hrs. During this period, various bans on operations, including overtime and shift extensions, will be implemented, with the majority of these restrictions continuing until Friday, October 13th.

DP World Brisbane, beginning on Saturday, October 7th commencing at 0700hrs, several operational bans, including overtime and shift extensions, will be initiated, with the majority of these bans continuing until Friday, October 13th.

DP World Melbourne, effective from Sunday, October 8th commencing at 1200hrs, we anticipate a series of work stoppages lasting from 1 to 24 hours. Additionally, various operational bans, such as overtime and work on specific vessels, will be enforced from October 8th through to Friday, October 20th.
